OPEN SHOW 2005
   Back to Show Index

The Catfish Study Group’s 6th Annual Open Show and Auction took place on September 18th at St Elizabeth’s Parish Hall, Aspull, Nr Wigan. There were 157 entries this year a whopping 55 over last years count, spread over 27 classes.

The entries were of the highest quality with some really large cats on parade. The Best in Show went to a quite magnificent Synodontis decorus, the best and most colourful that I have ever seen. The second went to the pim, Microglanis iheringi  which has been on the show bench for a few years now and still looks superb. Third best was the old cory favourite, C. pygmeus, and when you get a good one, as here, they take a lot to be beaten. One of my favourites on show was a Pimelodus maculatus with really nice markings and the "Crystal Eyed Catfish", Hemibagrus wyckii at least 18ins in length and not be be messed with.

As the show was getting judged the auction went into full swing, not as many members and public attended this year as there was a couple of other fish auctions taken place that day. It just meant that I could at least stretch my legs, which was one good thing. The quality and diversity of the fish being sold was excellent with plenty of Cory's being sold and some quite unusual fish such as the Dwarf Horseface Loach, Acantopsis octoactinotus, a pair making its way north in my car and doing very nicely thank you.

The food on offer from the kitchen was of course still of the highest "Northern" standard with meat & potato pie and mushy peas being the "coup de grace" as far as I'm concerned. A big thankyou of course extends to all the kitchen staff for keeping us fed.

Another great show came to an end at approximately 7-15pm with many prizes being given out. The pleasant surprise this year was a goodie bag for every person entering fish which meant that nobody went home empty handed. I had nearly a 500 mile round trip but it was worth it for the fish on show and in the auction, and of course the main thing at these CSG events is meeting up with like minded souls and just talking about CATFISH.
