OPEN SHOW 2006

The Catfish Study Group’s 7th Annual Open Show and Auction took place on September 17th for the first time at our new venue at the Highfields Working Men’s Club, Ratcliffe Street, (off Suddel Rd.) Darwen, Lanc’s.

The entries again this year were of the highest quality. The Best in Show went to the pim, Microglanis iheringi which was second last year and thoroughly deserved the top prize this year. Second best in show was won by a nicely coloured spiny monster, Pseudacanthicus spinosus and third place to the Crystal Eyed Catfish, Hemibagrus wyckii who was also among the trophies last year and still looking fearsome!. My personal favourite this year was the "Slopehead Catfish" Ageneiosus magoi, the contrasting black and white pattern was very impressive.

There was a total no less of an extra 8 classes added, mostly to split some of the A.O.V. classes into continents i.e. South American, African & Asian. There was 122 entries in total, down slightly on last years but made up in more ways than one with the quality on the show bench.

The auction this year along with the show was one of the best attended events for many years given the downturn in the hobby worldwide as I have been at most of the shows for the past 20 years and it was a pleasant surprise to see the large turn out at the new venue. Steve the auctioneer done his usual professional job with his usual spattering of humour, and the lots went at a frantic pace with some really excellent buys such as the latest must have for Cory fans, Corydoras weitzmani, and some very large Banjo cats which I managed to purchase for my"Banjo" collection. There was a good wide spectrum of species, not only of catfish but, Danio's, Characins, Killifish, Cichlids and Livebearers, not to mention the usual good choices of plants and frozen food. I think everybody went home with a satisfied look on their faces.

A big thank you of course extends to all the kitchen staff for keeping us fed, and this year we had a bar which was frequented now and again, by the non-drivers of course!.

Another great show came to an end at approximately 5-15pm with many prizes being given out. As last year there was a goodie bag for every person entering fish which meant that nobody went home empty handed. All in all I think a very good show and auction, and it all bodes well for next years show. Hope to see you all there.
