OPEN SHOW 2007
   Back to Show Index

This was the Catfish Study Group’s 8th Annual Open Show and Auction which took place on the 16th of September at the Highfields Working Men’s Club, Ratcliffe Street, (off Suddel Rd.) Darwen, Lanc’s.

Again the entries this year were of the highest quality with the Best in Show going to an enormous female Corydoras sterbai which was 8 years old and had been raised from a spawning by Dave Bent, which to me, adds more to the overall achievement. Second place went to one of the smaller members of the Mockokidae family, Mochokiella paynei and third to a quite majestic looking Scleromystax barbatus which points to the high standard that came from the Corydoradinae on the show bench this year. Both of the latter species belonged to Stuart Brown. If I had to pick a personal favourite I think it would have to be between 2 Scleromystax species, in the third placed barbatus and a beautifully marked C 113, and a lovely Rama chandramara in the Bagridae class.

The entries this year were also up, and the total of 157 matched our highest which was the 2005 show.

The auction again was of the highest standard with the top price of a trio of Corydoras macropterus going for £32, and with the scarcity of this species in the hobby you would be hard picked to get one fish for this price. Other cory's included C.habrosus, weitzmani, aeneus, paleatus, sterbai, araguaiaensis and a few c-numbers in the lots. This year there were a few Livebearers as well which I had not seen for a few years, such as the 'Red Prince' Characodon lateralis, and the usual flurry of Characins, Rasboras and oddballs. The sale of plants went very well and I think everybody in the hall got a plant or two!

Of course a big thank you again this year goes to all of the kitchen staff who worked hard to keep us all fed and watered and of course to Steve the auctioner, who kept the lots going at a steady pace.

This year for the first time we have invited members and non-members to sponsor classes in the show. Please visit this page for contributors

A very good show again this year, and we would also like to thank the judges who had a difficult job considering the high quality of the fish especially the Corydoradinae breeders section
which had 26 entries. They carried out a sterling job. Hope to see you all here again next year.
